Chapter Ten

She woke up alone.

But Kate couldn't complain. Gabe had been true to his word the night before, returning in less than an hour. She'd had just enough time to enjoy her bath, dry off, get her pajamas on, and crawl into bed.

They made love most of the night. The morning, too. Exhaustion had finally conquered, and they'd fallen asleep wrapped around each other.

She was surprised Gabe had gotten up so early. Though he was probably at his office. His assistant and staff had been left in a lurch the night before. He'd want to go smooth out any problems that arose.

Kate got out of bed, slipped on her robe, and did something she rarely did. She called room service and ordered breakfast—Belgian waffles with whipped cream and fresh berries along with tea.

Today would be for indulgences. It was a beautiful day. She wasn't expected at the Nook until tomorrow. No plans marked her calendar.

As she sat down to enjoy her meal, ideas for passing the day floated though her mind. Maybe she'd go into town, do a little shopping, grab lunch. Or a day by the lake. She could pack a picnic, bring a good book, invite someone along. It certainly didn't take long for her mind to settle back on Gabe.

She could call him up, see how late he planned on working. A late afternoon on the lake would be a treat.

Sipping her tea, Kate thought of what to say if she called. It was strange. A relationship with this man had been her fantasy for as many years as she could remember, and now it was happening, and what to do or say eluded her.

Did she call him or wait for him to call? Did he want something long-term? Or was it just sex? Could she open herself up to him emotionally and risk him breaking it off when he was finished?

Kate laughed at herself and shook her head. It was time to stop questioning and just call him. Just as she picked up the phone, the sound of the door unlocking and opening made her freeze.

Gabe strode in. Wearing only shorts and sneakers, he was dripping wet. His socks and T-shirt dangled from his fingers. Ah, the run and swim.

"Mornin'.” With a grin, he strode into the bedroom and emerged a minute later, rubbing his chest with a large fluffy white towel. “Calling someone?"

It took a moment for the message to penetrate. Glancing down at the phone, still in her hand, she quickly replaced it on its cradle. “Actually, I was just about to call you. Thought you were working."

"I put in a couple of hours earlier before my run. But now...” He dropped the towel, crossed the room, and reached for her hand. With a quick tug, he pulled her up and against him. “The rest of the day is mine...and yours."

"Hmmmmm” was all that escaped as his lips claimed hers. Cool wetness quickly dampened the front of her cotton T-shirt and pajama pants.
